Asian Arts Publication Lab is thrilled to invite you to a rare masterclass on the father of Korean cinema and legendary filmmaker: “Im Kwon-taek, Master of Korean Film,” presented by award-winning director Kim Hong-Joon. Join us for a unique lecture about the works of Im Kwon-taek from the perspective of someone who worked closely with him, followed by a free screening of his iconic film Seopyeonje (1993) and a Q&A with Kim Hong-Joon.

⭐ About the presenter:

KIM Hong-Joon is an award-winning Korean director and screenwriter of films including Jungle Story and La Vie En Rose, as well as the author of I, a Filmmaker: Kim Hong-Joon's Film Notes and Two or Three Things You Want to Know About Movies. Drawing on his decades of expertise as Former Director of the Korean Film Archive and Professor Emeritus at Korea National University of Arts, Kim Hong-Joon will present a deep dive into the works of one of South Korea’s most renowned film directors, Im Kwon-taek. 

⭐ About Im Kwon-taek:

Known widely as “the father of Korean cinema,” IM Kwon-taek is a South Korean film director celebrated for his long, prolific career with emphasis on themes of Korean history and cultural identity. He was the first Korean director to win the Best Director Award at Cannes Film Festival, and he received the Honorary Golden Bear at Berlin Film Festival. He is celebrated for creating films that are uniquely Korean, exploring historic subjects such as the Japanese occupation of Korea and the Korean war, as well as cultural topics such as pansori, a form of Korean folk opera. His films earned him wide critical acclaim and led to his position as one of the most well-respected Korean directors.
