Synopsis

When plans to demolish the American base in Uijungbu, Korea surface, Park Insun, a long-time resident of the neighboring shanty town and former “comfort woman,” experiences distress after she learns of a former colleague’s passing. This fictional film combines elements of fantasy and historical reality in its reckoning with the afterlives of US military bases and sexual trauma, empowering Insun to take control of her own fate.

Director's Bio

KIM Dongryung and PARK Kyoungtae

KIM Dongryung (b. 1977, South Korea) majored in English Literature and Filmmaking at KAFA and University of Paris 8. In 2004 she started doing photography and made short films and documentaries on the daily lives of people in a US military camp town. Together with Park Kyoungtae, she directed TOUR OF DUTY (2012), a documentary about Park Insun, a former US military 'comfort woman'. THE PREGNANT TREE AND THE GOBLIN (2019) is a fictionalised version of Park Insun's biography and was in competition at Seoul Independent Film Festival. PARK Kyoungtae (b. 1975, South Korea) studied sociology and visual anthropology. Since 2000, he has made documentaries on women and children from a US military camp town in South Korea.
