PHILIP SZPORER & MARLENE MILLAR are an acclaimed Montreal-based filmmaking duo known for their visually arresting dance films and documentaries that explore the intersection of movement, identity, and cultural expression. Their latest work Maboungou: Being in the World (2023) is a mesmerizing portrait of choreographer and philosopher Zab Maboungou that premiered at Hot Docs before winning the Best Canadian Feature Documentary award at Festival International du Film sur l'Art (FIFA). With over two decades of collaboration, the filmmakers have developed a signature style that blends cinematic poetry with profound cultural inquiry. Their previous works include: Momentum (2015), an immersive 3D dance film presented at Tate Modern and Centre Pompidou BODYreBEL (2010), winner of the Jury Prize for Best Canadian Short at FIFA Chasing the Past (2005), an official selection at Dance on Camera Festival at Lincoln Center Szporer (a writer, filmmaker and Concordia University lecturer) and Millar (a choreographer-turned-director) bring complementary perspectives to their boundary-pushing works that have screened at prestigious venues including: Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) American Dance Festival Festival International de Films de Montréal (FIFM) Their films have earned support from the Canada Council for the Arts, SODEC, and the National Film Board of Canada. Currently in development on a new multimedia dance project with the National Arts Centre, they continue to redefine how movement is captured on screen. Through their sustained artistic partnership, Szporer and Millar have become vital chroniclers of contemporary dance, creating works that illuminate how bodies speak across cultures and disciplines. Maboungou: Being in the World represents their most mature synthesis yet of philosophical inquiry and kinetic cinema.
