KIM Sin-jeong is a bold new voice in South Korean independent cinema, best known for her striking debut short film Suzi (2023). A graduate of the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA), KIM has quickly established herself as a filmmaker unafraid to explore raw, uncomfortable truths about contemporary society. Her breakthrough work Suzi - a visceral exploration of female rage and societal expectations - premiered at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival before going on to screen at Fantastic Fest in Austin and Sitges Film Festival, where it earned praise for its "uncompromising vision and electrifying lead performance" (Screen Anarchy, 2023). The film's confrontational style and dark humor have drawn comparisons to early Park Chan-wook and Julia Ducournau. Prior to Suzi, KIM's student film The Cut (2021) won the Special Jury Prize at the Seoul International Extreme-Short Film Festival for its daring formal experimentation. Her works often feature transgressive female protagonists and employ shocking visual metaphors to critique patriarchal structures. KIM is currently developing her first feature film, which promises to expand on her distinctive blend of psychological horror and social commentary. With Suzi, she has cemented her reputation as one of the most exciting and provocative new filmmakers in Korea's vibrant genre scene.
