AEW MEDIA ARTS

Arts East-West (AEW) presents Gina Kim’s immersive XR and VR trilogy and Montreal artist Crystal Chan’s interactive audio odyssey, in which technology reshapes memory, trauma, and the diasporic body.

Gina Kim
Retrospective: Comfortless Trilogy
This VR storytelling exhibition is part of Gina Kim's "Comfortless Trilogy", which includes a three-part VR film—“Bloodless” (2017, 12 min), “Tearless” (2021, 12 min), and “Comfortless” (2023, 16 min). The trilogy explores the history of US military camp towns in South Korea, aligning with Arts East-West's mission to bridge East and West by showcasing marginalized voices. It embraces technology to foster cultural and artistic discourse, both nationally and globally.
Bloodless (2017), which depicts the last day of a sex worker murdered by a U.S. soldier in South Korea in 1992, won the Best VR Story Award at the 74th Venice International Film Festival, the Best VR Film Award at the 58th Thessaloniki International Film Festival, and Best VR Short Film at the 15th Bogotá Short Film Festival.

Tearless (2020) premiered at the Venice Film Festival and won the Best Immersive Work Award at the Geneva International Film Festival.

Comfortless (2023), supported by the Korean Creative Content Agency, Jeonju International Film Festival, UCLA Faculty Research Grant, and the UCLA Center for the Study of Women, also premiered at Venice and will be showcased at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea.
All three pieces have garnered international acclaim, leading to retrospectives at prominent venues around the world, including the Korean Film Archive, Seoul International Women’s Film Festival, and CinemAsia Film Festival in Amsterdam, among others.
Crystal Chan
Eighty Thousand Steps (2023, 19 min for first episode) is an interactive audio journey exploring memory, family, and migration through the real experiences of Asian Canadians reconnecting with their cross-border identities. Through innovative and thought-provoking approaches, Chan's work invites viewers to reflect on the complexities of belonging and representation in a globalized world.

Created in collaboration between Stitch Media and Crystal Chan, as one of eight projects selected for the CBC/Canada Council of the Arts Creation Accelerator Program.

2024 Signal Awards Finalist for Most Innovative Audio Experience and Best Experimental Podcast.

*EMW: In 2025, AmérAsia joins KFFC under the “EMW/EastMeetsWest” category, highlighting Asian and diaspora films to amplify media arts voices locally and globally. The AmérAsia Film Festival was established in 1999 by Mi-Jeong Lee, media artist and founder of Arts East-West, and focused on Asian diaspora arts. This integration continues a 25-year tradition of celebrating cross-cultural narratives while expanding its reach through the KFFC platform.
